Speed is a scalar quantity, while velocity is a vector. In other words, velocity has both magnitude and direction, while speed has only magnitude.
In yet more words, speed does not specify the direction of travel, but velocity does.
According to Wikipedia, it was Galileo that first defined speed as the distance travelled per unit of time.
